Prime Minister Narendra Modi joined the growing list of leaders and public figures paying tribute to veteran Malayalam actor Salim Kumar following his demise on Saturday night.
In a message shared on social media on Sunday, Modi expressed his condolences and remembered the National Award-winning actor for his versatility and enduring contribution to Indian cinema. "Deeply saddened by the passing of veteran actor Shri Salim Kumar Ji. Over the course of a distinguished career, he made a mark with his versatility and memorable performances across a wide range of roles. My thoughts are with his family and countless admirers in this hour of grief. Om Shanti," the Prime Minister wrote.
Modi's tribute comes as condolences continue to pour in from across the political and cultural spectrum following the actor's death at the age of 56. Widely regarded as one of Malayalam cinema's most accomplished performers, Salim Kumar built a remarkable career spanning comedy, drama, writing and filmmaking.
Beginning his artistic journey as a mimicry performer, the actor rose to prominence through television and stage performances before becoming one of Malayalam cinema's most recognisable comic talents during the 2000s. Over the years, he delivered several iconic performances in films such as Ee Parakkum Thalika, Meesa Madhavan, CID Moosa, Pulival Kalyanam, Chathikkatha Chanthu and Mayavi.
While celebrated primarily for his comedy, Salim Kumar also earned widespread acclaim for his dramatic work. His performances in Perumazhakkalam and Achanurangatha Veedu showcased a different dimension of his talent, before he delivered a career-defining turn in Adaminte Makan Abu, which won him the National Film Award for Best Actor.
Salim Kumar passed away at a private hospital in Kochi after battling a series of health complications in recent years. He is survived by his wife Sunitha and their two sons, Chandu and Aaromal.
