First-time director Arun Anirudhan's film Athiradi, starring Basil Joseph and Tovino Thomas in important roles, is set to start streaming on Sony LIV from June 19 onwards, the streamer announced earlier this Friday. The digital premiere is set to take place around a month after the film's theatrical release. Released on May 14, the film grossed more than 50 crore from theatres worldwide and is considered a major hit.
It tells the story of a youngster named Samkutty (Basil Joseph) who revives a long-dormant festival at his college, only to spur an ugly fight with an erstwhile thug named Sreekuttan (Tovino Thomas). When the festival threatens to end his long-time dream of performing his song in front of a live audience, Sreekuttan reverts to extreme measures to thwart Samkutty's plan to bring back the festival.
Athiradi brought Basil and Tovino back together for the first time after 2021's Minnal Murali.
The film also stars Riya Shibu, Vineeth Sreenivasan, Zarin Shihab, Shaan Rahman, Vishnu Agasthya, Darshana Rajendran, Jeo Baby, and Shelvin James, among others. Basil Joseph also produced the film alongside Dr Ananthu S Entertainments through their namesake banners.
Talking about its digital debut, Basil stated, "Sony LIV has been home to some of our most memorable journeys, so it's incredibly special for us to bring Athiradi to the platform. The film celebrates the fun, friendships, chaos and emotions that make campus life unforgettable. We had a fantastic time creating this world, and I'm excited for audiences across the country to join in on the madness and entertainment when Athiradi premieres on Sony LIV."
On the other hand, Tovino Thomas said, "Sreekuttan is one of the most entertaining characters I’ve had the chance to play. The film is packed with humour, energy and action, and I’m excited for audiences to discover—or revisit—its unique charm when it premieres on Sony LIV."
