Actor Vinayakan, best known for Jailer, Kammatti Paadam and the Aadu franchise, has been booked by the Mavelikkara Police following a complaint alleging insult to the modesty of a woman and violations under the Information Technology Act. The FIR was registered on Thursday based on the direction of the Kerala State Commission for Protection of Child Rights.
According to reports, the case stems from an incident that allegedly took place in July last year. The complainant, a native of Thazhakara in Alappuzha district who works in Mumbai, had reportedly sent Vinayakan a Facebook post critical of the actor via WhatsApp. The complaint alleges that, in response, Vinayakan shared on his Facebook account a photograph of the complainant's eight-year-old daughter, which was being used as the complainant's WhatsApp profile picture, along with the latter's phone number and remarks perceived as obscene.
The complainant further alleged that the post led to numerous people contacting him over the phone and subjecting him to abusive language. Following the incident, he approached the Child Rights Commission, seeking action against the actor.
The matter was later taken up during a sitting of the Commission in Alappuzha, which subsequently directed the police to register a case. Acting on the recommendation, the Mavelikkara Police registered the FIR on Thursday.
Police are now expected to expedite further proceedings in the case. Vinayakan is likely to be served a notice and summoned for questioning, with investigators reportedly planning to issue the notice sometime next week.
This is not the first time Vinayakan has found himself at the centre of controversy. The actor has previously drawn criticism over his public remarks and social media activity, including posts that sparked widespread debate and backlash.
Despite the controversies, Vinayakan remains active on the professional front. He will next be seen in the highly anticipated Rajinikanth-starrer Jailer 2, directed by Nelson Dilipkumar, which is slated to hit theatres on October 15.
