Mohanlal's 2005 film Udayananu Tharam is set to return to theatres in a restored 4K version on February 6. The rerelease date was announced by Mohanlal through his social media handle on Tuesday. The film, scripted by the late Sreenivasan, marked the directorial debut of Rosshan Andrrews and was both a commercial success and a critical acclaim. It will be screened in 4K Dolby Atmos format using updated restoration technology.
In a video message, Mohanlal described Udayananu Tharam as one of Sreenivasan’s finest screenplays and invited audiences and families to revisit it in theatres. The film centres on the titular protagonist Udayabhanu (Mohanlal), an aspiring filmmaker whose screenplay is stolen by a friend, Rajappan Thengamoodu (Sreenivasan), who later reinvents himself as superstar Saroj Kumar. The cast also includes Meena, Jagathy Sreekumar, Mukesh and Salim Kumar in key roles, along with Cochin Haneefa, Janardhanan, Bhavana, Indrans, TP Madhavan, Anand and AK Lohithadas.
Rosshan, sharing Mohanlal’s announcement on social media, described the film as a tribute to the unseen struggles of aspiring filmmakers and acknowledged the lasting relevance of Sreenivasan’s writing. Often cited as a sharp satire on the Malayalam film industry, Udayananu Tharam examines ambition, betrayal and the cost of success through humour and drama.
