Fresh controversy has erupted within the Malayalam actors’ fraternity AMMA (Association of Malayalam Movie Artists), following a bitter exchange between Vice President Lakshmipriya and executive member Neena Kurup. The row, which began after the organisation’s recent family gathering in Kochi, has now escalated into a wider internal crisis involving leaked audio clips, anonymous letters and growing dissent among members.

The immediate trigger was an alleged disagreement during the family event, where Lakshmipriya coordinated a dance performance. She accused Neena of preventing a participant, who had dressed for the programme, from going on stage. In a strongly worded audio message posted in the executive members’ WhatsApp group, Lakshmipriya criticised Neena’s conduct in harsh and personal terms. The recording was later leaked to the media, prompting widespread discussion within the industry.

Responding to the outburst, Neena said the language used was inappropriate and unbecoming of an office-bearer. She maintained that any grievances should have been addressed formally within the executive committee rather than aired in an abusive manner. Regardless of the underlying issue, she argued, the tone of the message damaged the dignity of the organisation.

The controversy deepened with the circulation of anonymous letters among AMMA members. The letters refer to a pending cheating case against Lakshmipriya and her husband relating to a past film production venture, and question why a complaint allegedly submitted to the association had not been acted upon. Court proceedings in the matter are reportedly scheduled for early March. Lakshmipriya has not publicly responded to the contents of the letter.

Investigations are said to be underway to trace the source of the anonymous mail, as access to members’ addresses is limited to key office-bearers. Meanwhile, the executive WhatsApp group has reportedly been placed on “admin only” mode, and additional audio messages, including one attributed to the General Secretary, have also surfaced.

With some members expressing dissatisfaction and even considering resignation, the episode has raised serious concerns about internal governance and confidentiality within AMMA. Further developments are expected in the coming days as the association weighs possible action.
