Malayalam cinema classic Thenmavin Kombathu, starring Mohanlal and Shobana in the lead roles, is set to return to theatres in a 4K Dolby Atmos version this September. The rerelease teaser for the Priyadarshan directorial has now been unveiled by Matinee Now, the company in charge of the restoration.
Released in 1994, Thenmavin Kombathu is regarded as one of Priyadarshan’s most celebrated films and remains a beloved comedy entertainer among Malayalam audiences. The film, shot by KV Anand, blends romance, humour and rural charm with a memorable soundtrack. It features an ensemble cast including Nedumudi Venu, Pappu, Sreenivasan, Sukumari, Kaviyoor Ponnamma and KPAC Lalitha alongside Mohanlal and Shobana.
For its theatrical rerelease, Thenmavin Kombathu has been restored from its original 35mm print and scanned into 4K. The film's music and soundscape have also been given a new lease of life through a Dolby Atmos mix, with the restoration aiming to retain the essence of the original theatrical experience.
Sharing the re-release teaser, Matinee Now said the restoration was part of a year-long effort to bring the film and its memories back to the big screen without compromising its original spirit. The makers also noted that several artistes who were part of Thenmavin Kombathu are no longer with us. The rerelease, they said, will offer audiences an opportunity to experience their performances once again on the big screen.
