In a significant turn of events within the Malayalam film industry, the Film Employees Federation of Kerala (FEFKA) has declined the resignation submitted by filmmaker B Unnikrishnan from the post of general secretary, with the director subsequently agreeing to remain in office.

Unnikrishnan had recently informed the organisation of his intention to step down, citing personal reasons. He had also indicated that it was time for a new generation of leadership to take charge after serving in the federation’s top executive role for nearly 18 years. Following the development, FEFKA convened an emergency general council meeting in Kochi on Friday, attended by Unnikrishnan and senior office-bearers. After deliberations, the council unanimously decided not to accept his resignation and requested him to continue leading the organisation.

Respecting the collective decision, Unnikrishnan later stated that he would abide by the council’s verdict and continue in the role. It was also decided that Sibi Malayil would remain as the federation’s president. Unnikrishnan has been closely associated with FEFKA since its formative years and has played a central role in shaping the body into one of the most influential trade organisations in the Malayalam film industry.

Speaking to the media after the meeting, he also responded to recent controversies surrounding producer Murali Kunnumpurath and the film Sumathi Valavu. He said members of the federation connected to the project had already submitted expenditure details to the organisation.

He further criticised allegations that certain films were effectively directed by actors rather than credited filmmakers, in an apparent reference to claims linked to Malikappuram and actor Unni Mukundan. According to Unnikrishnan, filmmaking is a collaborative process led by the director and technical crew, and he stressed that actors should focus on their own responsibilities while allowing technicians to carry out theirs. He also revealed that editors affiliated with the federation had raised concerns about unnecessary interference by some actors during post-production.
