The 2001 Malayalam blockbuster Ravanaprabhu, starring Mohanlal in dual roles, will return to theatres on October 10 in a restored 4K version with Dolby Atmos sound. The film, written and helmed by Ranjith in his directorial debut, was made as a sequel to IV Sasi’s 1993 classic Devasuram, for which Ranjith had originally penned the script.
In Ravanaprabhu, Mohanlal reprised his role as Mangalassery Neelakandan while also portraying Neelakandan’s son, MN Karthikeyan. The narrative centres on generational conflict and revenge, as Karthikeyan confronts the family’s rival, Mundackal Shekharan, while seeking to reclaim their ancestral home. Combining action, family drama, romance and elements of feudal rivalry, the film was the highest-grossing Malayalam release of 2001. It won multiple honours, including the Kerala State Film Award for Best Film with Popular Appeal and Aesthetic Value. The ensemble cast features Vasundhara Das, Napoleon, Revathi, Innocent, Vijayaraghavan and Siddique in key roles.
The rerelease of Ravanaprabhu follows the commercial success of recent restorations of other Mohanlal titles such as Spadikam, Devadoothan, Manichithrathazhu and Chotta Mumbai. The veteran actor recently won the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award 2023 at the 71st National Film Awards, making him the first Malayalam actor to earn the honour.
