Mohanlal has confirmed that Drishyam 3, the third instalment in Jeethu Joseph’s acclaimed franchise, will go on floors on September 22. The veteran actor made the announcement on Sunday while speaking to the media, a day after being conferred with the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award.
Mohanlal said the film’s production will commence with a pooja ceremony, after which he will travel to New Delhi to receive the award. The Dadasaheb Phalke Award, the country’s highest honour in cinema, will be presented at the 71st National Film Awards ceremony on September 23. Mohanlal becomes only the second Malayali to be honoured with the award, after veteran filmmaker Adoor Gopalakrishnan.
The Drishyam franchise began in 2013 with the story of Georgekutty, a cable TV operator who goes to great lengths to protect his family after a crime. The 2021 sequel, Drishyam 2, picked up the story years later, showing how his past continues to affect him and his family. The films have been remade in several Indian languages, including Hindi, Tamil, Telugu and Kannada, as well as in Chinese, making it one of the most widely adapted Indian film series.
Earlier, Jeethu indicated that Drishyam 3 will serve as a natural continuation of Georgekutty’s journey, moving away from the intricate thriller format of the previous instalment. Further details on the release are expected to be announced in the coming months.
