Despite Unni Mukundan’s recent claims about discontinuing plans for a sequel, Cubes Entertainments has signalled that the Marco film series may continue in some form, even as uncertainty surrounds its future. Responding to a social media comment suggesting that a sequel could be made by another production team if the rights were acquired, the company issued a statement clarifying its exclusive control over the franchise. “Discussions regarding the Marco series are still not over yet. Cubes Entertainments exclusively owns all rights to the Marco, and we firmly believe the journey of Marco holds immense potential. Please note, we are not open to transferring or sharing the rights of this franchise,” the production house wrote.
The comments have sparked fresh speculation about whether the production house intends to go ahead with a second instalment. It remains unclear if the plan involves a new lead actor, a different language, or a complete reimagining of the story. Marco was also produced in association with the lead actor’s home production company, Unni Mukundan Films. Unni, who starred as the titular gangster Marco, had earlier confirmed that he would not reprise the role. Replying to a fan query on Instagram, Unni wrote, “Bro, apologies but I have dropped plans to continue the Marco series. Too much negativity around the project. I’ll try my best to bring something bigger and better than Marco. Thanks for all the love and positivity.”
Released in 2024 and directed by Haneef Adeni, Marco was a spin-off from the 2019 film Mikhael. It chronicled the rise of Marco within Kerala’s gold mafia and achieved major commercial success. The film grossed over Rs 100 crore globally, becoming the highest-grossing A-rated Malayalam film to date. However, it also faced severe backlash for its excessive violence and thin narrative. The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) denied satellite rights for television broadcast and raised concerns about its impact on young audiences. A senior CBFC official even urged the chairperson to seek central government intervention to prevent its OTT release. Despite these efforts, Marco is currently streaming on SonyLIV.
Producer Shareef Muhammed had previously defended Marco as an adult-oriented work of fiction but acknowledged that future projects would not feature the same level of brutality.
