The Unni Mukundan-starrer Marco, directed by Haneef Adeni, is set to premiere on SonyLIV from February 14. The announcement follows the film’s successful theatrical run, during which it surpassed Rs 100 crore in global box office collections, as claimed by the makers.
Billed as one of the most violent Indian films, Marco opened to a polarised critical reception, with praise for its technical aspects but criticism directed at its writing and depiction of violence. Despite the mixed response, the film performed well commercially, particularly with its Hindi-dubbed version, which reportedly set a new record for the highest-grossing Hindi release of a Malayalam film, surpassing Aadujeevitham (The Goat Life).
Produced by Shareef Muhammed, Marco also stars Siddique, Jagadish, Abhimanyu Shammy Thilakan, Kabir Duhan Singh, Anson Paul, and Yukti Thareja. The film was released theatrically in Tamil and Telugu as well. The makers have confirmed that a sequel is in the works, with Unni stating in a recent media interaction that plans for a follow-up will proceed once a strong script is finalised.
While SonyLIV will stream the film in its original language Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, and Kannada, the streaming details for the Hindi version are yet to be officially announced.
An excerpt from the CE review of the film reads, "Marco becomes extremely hard to sit through towards the end when a family, including kids and women, is subjected to brute torture. Violence is never the problem; why and how you show it holds the key. It is ridiculous how insensitively these portions are filmed and then repeatedly played to amp up the emotions. If it was intended to make the viewer feel Marco's pain and rage, the makers should realise that such a callous portrayal only distances us from the proceedings on screen. But if the idea is to make us squirm and puke, then yes, mission accomplished."
