As reported earlier, the 1989 classic Oru Vadakkan Veeragatha is set for a re-release in 4K resolution with Dolby Atmos sound on February 7. Its trailer was launched recently at the AMMA office in Kochi. Mammootty, Mohanlal, and Suresh Gopi unveiled the trailer together, while actors Vineeth Kumar, Jomol, and Ramu, who starred in the film, were also present.

The re-release endeavour is headed by Oru Vadakkan Veeragatha's producer PV Gangadharan's children, Shenuga Jayathilak and Sherga Sandeep. The late producer’s family expressed their wish to reintroduce the film to audiences using modern visual and sound technologies. Sherga shared, “36 years ago, our father released this film. Unfortunately, he passed away last year and couldn’t fulfill his dream of re-releasing it in 4K. In his memory as a tribute, my sisters and I decided to make it happen. Together with MT Vasudevan sir, we agreed to re-release the film for today’s generation, a true classic made without any special effects or VFX.”

Expressing her gratitude to Mammootty, Mohanlal, and Suresh Gopi, she further added, “Mammootty sir was incredibly supportive throughout the entire process. At the trailer launch, we received an outpouring of support from Mammootty sir, Mohanlal sir, and Suresh Gopi sir, for which we are deeply thankful.”

Directed by Hariharan, Oru Vadakkan Veeragatha is a retelling of the medieval ballad from North Malabar, focusing primarily on the character of Chandu Chekavar. The film offers a different perspective on Chandu, traditionally depicted as a traitor, presenting him instead as a misunderstood warrior. While Mammootty played Chandu, the film had Suresh Gopi as Aromal Chekavar, Madhavi as Unniyarcha, Captain Raju as Aringodar, and Balan K Nair as Valiya Kannappan Chekavar.

Besides being a massive commercial sucess, Oru Vadakkan Veeragatha also secured four National Film Awards, including Best Actor for Mammootty and Best Screenplay for MT Vasudevan Nair. It also won eight Kerala State Film Awards.
