On Tuesday, actor Unni Mukundan announced his decision to step down from his role as the Treasurer of the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA), citing work-related pressures and concerns over his mental health.

In a statement issue on social media, Unni explained, “The increasing demands of my work, particularly with Marco and other production commitments, have significantly impacted my mental health. Balancing these responsibilities, along with the pressures of my professional life, has become overwhelming.” He further stated that stepping back was essential to focus on his well-being and his family.

Unni also expressed gratitude for the trust and support he received during his tenure, adding, “While I have always given my best in serving this role, I recognize that I can no longer fulfill my duties effectively given the growing commitments ahead.” He confirmed his willingness to continue serving until a new treasurer is appointed to ensure a smooth transition.

The announcement comes at a pivotal moment in Unni's career, following the massive success of his latest film Marco, an extremely violent actioner. The film, which has reportedly crossed Rs 100 crores at the global box office, has performed exceptionally well in its dubbed Hindi and Telugu versions, in addition to its strong reception in Malayalam. This success has significantly boosted Unni's standing in the industry.

AMMA is yet to announce Unni's successor for the treasurer position. The association is currently operating with an ad hoc committee following the resignation of its president, Mohanlal, and the disbanding of its executive committee. The resignations were prompted by findings from the Justice Hema Committee, which revealed systemic sexual harassment within the Malayalam film industry.
