On Monday, the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (A.M.M.A.) issued an official statement condemning the online abuse directed at actress Honey Rose. In a formal declaration, AMMA's ad-hoc committee criticised the targeted harassment aimed at defaming the actress and, by extension, femininity and the acting profession.
“AMMA, an association of actors in Malayalam cinema, hereby condemns the deliberate attempts by some to defame our member and prominent actress of Malayalam cinema Honey Rose through social media and thereby defame femininity and her profession,” the statement read. The association also expressed its full support for the actress in her legal actions against the perpetrators. “AMMA also hereby declares its full support for all the legal battles being initiated by Honey Rose in the said matter and is ready to provide all necessary legal assistance if needed,” the statement concluded. The ad-hoc committee of AMMA, which includes prominent figures such as Mohanlal, Jagadish, Tovino Thomas, Suraj Venjaramoodu, Unni Mukundan, Ansiba Hassan, Jomol and Ananya, among others, united in this decision.
Honey recently addressed the obscene comments and harassment she has faced on social media, reiterating her commitment to challenging such behaviour. Her stand has received widespread support from the public and industry colleagues.
This issue follows legal action initiated by the Ernakulam Central police, with one individual already detained for offensive remarks. Honey’s upcoming film Rachel is set for release on January 10, as discussions on online decorum and gendered abuse gain momentum.
