Speculations about a third instalment of the Malayalam film Drishyam (2013) have been ongoing since the release of its sequel in 2021. On Thursday, Mohanlal confirmed Drishyam 3 through a social media post, accompanied by a photo with director Jeethu Joseph and producer Antony Perumbavoor of Aashirvad Productions. The post was captioned, "The past never stays silent. Drishyam 3 confirmed!"

Drishyam follows Georgekutty (Mohanlal), a cable TV operator whose life is disrupted after his family becomes involved in the accidental death of a police officer’s son. He devises an intricate alibi to protect them. In the sequel, the case is reopened seven years later, forcing Georgekutty to execute another calculated move to escape the law. Besides Mohanlal, the franchise features Meena, Asha Sarath, Siddique, Esther Anil and Ansiba Hassan in key roles, with the second instalment also starring Murali Gopy and Saikumar. The sequel skipped a theatrical release to become a direct-to-OTT film, which streamed on Prime Video.

The first instalment was reportedly the first Malayalam film to gross Rs 50 crore worldwide and was remade in multiple languages. A-listers from various industries reprised the roles originally played by Mohanlal and Meena. Both instalments were remade in Hindi, Telugu, and Kannada, while Tamil only adapted the first part. The film was also remade in Sinhala and Chinese, with reports of forthcoming Korean and English adaptations.

The confirmation of the threequel to Drishyam follows Mohanlal’s announcement of a new film to be written and directed by Anoop Menon. The actor is currently shooting for Sathyan Anthikad's Hridayapoorvam, and has Prithviraj Sukumaran's L2: Empuraan and Tharun Moorthy's Thudarum awaiting release. Additionally, he is part of Mahesh Narayanan’s multi-starrer film, tentatively titled MMMN, alongside Mammootty, Fahadh Faasil, Kunchacko Boban and Nayanthara.
