The makers of the Mohanlal-starrer L2: Empuraan, the sequel to the 2019 blockbuster Lucifer, started unveiling its extended cast, promising two updates daily for the next 18 days—one at 10 am and another at 6 pm. Kicking off this, it was unveiled on Sunday that Sshivada and Jaise Jose will reprise their roles from the first instalment as Sreelekha and Xavier, respectively.
The announcement came via respective videos featuring both actors expressing their enthusiasm for the sequel. Jaise highlighted what a significant opportunity it was to act alongside Mohanlal in a key sequence, while Sshivada noted that she got to share screen space with veteran filmmaker Fazil this time around. Notably, Fazil—who is also returning to his role from Lucifer—was the filmmaker who introduced Sshivada to films with Living Together (2011).
The buzz around L2: Empuraan has intensified following the recent teaser release, with speculation now rife about the film being presented in IMAX. Director Prithviraj Sukumaran recently hinted at this possibility on X (formerly Twitter), calling modern IMAX mastering technology “a thing of wonder”. This follows his earlier statement that the film was shot in an anamorphic 1:2.8 aspect ratio rather than full-format IMAX lenses. The actor-filmmaker also recently reiterated that the second instalment is part of a trilogy, envisioned from the outset when his directorial debut Lucifer was conceived.
L2: Empuraan sees Mohanlal returning as Khureshi Ab'raam/Stephen Nedumbally, with Murali Gopy handling the script. Prithviraj, Tovino Thomas, Manju Warrier, Indrajith Sukumaran, Saikumar, Saniya Iyappan and Nandu are also reprising their roles from Lucifer. Produced by Antony Perumbavoor’s Aashirvad Cinemas in collaboration with Lyca Productions, the second instalment is set for a grand multi-language release on March 27.
