The Malayalam film industry has lost a legendary filmmaker as veteran actor-director Sreenivasan breathed his last on Saturday. Also a noted writer, he passed away due to age-related ailments at the age of 69. Condolences from across the country have been pouring in following his demise. Among them, actor Rajinikanth expressed his deep shock and sadness upon hearing about Sreenivasan's death.
In a voice note, he said, "It was shocking to know that my good friend Sreenivasan is no more. He was my classmate in the film institute that I studied in. He is an excellent actor and a very good human being. Let his soul rest in peace."
Sreenivasan was one of Malayalam cinema's most prolific writers and actors and has been an active part of the industry since the late 70s. Having started as an actor, he has starred in over 200 films. He won a Kerala State-level Special Jury Mention award for his performance in Thakarachenda. Besides that, he has bagged five other State awards and a National award for his directorial debut, Chinthavishtayaya Shyamala.
Known for his humour, sharp satire, and social commentary, Sreenivasan scripted some of Malayalam cinema's most iconic films, including Boeing Boeing, Sandesam, Mazha Peyyunnu Maddalam Kottunnu, Varavelppu, Nadodikkattu, and Udayananu Tharam. He frequently collaborated with directors Priyadarshan, Sathyan Anthikad, and actors Mohanlal and Mammootty in his four-decade-long career.
His was last seen in the much-delayed Nancy Rani, released earlier this year, while his last release as a writer was Paviyettante Madhoorachooral, which came out in 2018.
