As a mark of respect for veteran Malayalam actor-director Sreenivasan, the Kerala government has announced that police honours will be accorded at his funeral. The noted film personality, who was an active part of the Malayalam industry for five decades, passed away on Saturday due to age-related ailments at the age of 69.

Sreenivasan's final rites will be performed on Sunday, December 21, 2025, at his residence in Udayamperoor, Kandanad, Ernakulam. An advisory from the Secretary to the Government read, "Government have learnt with profound grief the demise of Shri Sreenivasan, renowned Malayalam actor, scriptwriter and filmmaker. He had won numerous awards, including a National Film Award (Best Film on Other Social Issues - Chinthavishtayaya Shyamala) and six Kerala State Film Awards."

Further, the District Collector has been requested to arrange for wreaths to be placed on behalf of the state government. The Commissioner of Police has also been instructed to make arrangements for police honours, including a bugle salute, during the funeral.

Remembering Sreenivasan: Laughter with a purpose

Speaking to the media, actor and screenwriter Renji Panicker shared that Sreenivasan's mortal remains will be taken to his residence and later to the Town Hall for the public to pay homage. Public viewing is set to be held at 1 PM.

A collective wave of grief had filled the film industry upon Sreenivasan's passing. Many celebrities and politicians including Rajinikanth, Kamal Haasan, Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan, Sathyan Anthikad, Mohanlal and many others, penned a note condoling the demise of the noted filmmaker. Many other state ministers also come forward to condole Sreenivasan's passing, reflecting on his iconic film journey.

Sreenivasan: Master of everyday humour and auteur par excellence

Sreenivasan was one of Malayalam cinema's most prolific writers and actors and has been an active part of the industry since the late 70s. Having started as an actor, he has starred in over 200 films. He won a Kerala State-level Special Jury Mention award for his performance in Thakarachenda. Besides that, he has bagged five other State awards and a National award for his directorial debut, Chinthavishtayaya Shyamala.

Known for his humour, sharp satire, and social commentary, Sreenivasan scripted some of Malayalam cinema's most iconic films, including Boeing Boeing, Sandesam, Mazha Peyyunnu Maddalam Kottunnu, Varavelppu, Nadodikkattu, and Udayananu Tharam. He frequently collaborated with directors Priyadarshan, Sathyan Anthikad, and actors Mohanlal and Mammootty in his four-decade-long career.

His was last seen in the much-delayed Nancy Rani, released earlier this year, while his last release as a writer was Paviyettante Madhoorachooral, which came out in 2018.
