Veteran actor Mammootty issued his first response to the Justice Hema Committee report on Sunday through a statement on his social media. Addressing the recent developments in the Malayalam film industry, the actor underscored the importance of collective responsibility and unity in implementing the committee's recommendations to prevent further misconduct.

In his statement, Mammootty emphasised the need for the film industry's organisations to respond to such issues before individuals express their opinions. "It is the protocol that the actors' association and its leadership should be the first to respond regarding such matters," he explained, adding that he was waiting for the association's official response before sharing his statement.

Reflecting on the broader implications of the committee's findings, Mammootty pointed out that cinema is a mirror of society. "Cinema is a reflection of society, it encompasses both its virtues and vices. The film industry is something society closely observes, and therefore, every incident within it becomes a topic of significant discussion," he stated. The actor also called for vigilance and awareness among film professionals to ensure a safe and ethical working environment. "Film professionals must be vigilant and conscious to ensure that nothing undesirable occurs within the industry."

The actor also expressed his support for the Justice Hema Committee's findings, which were aimed at addressing misconduct within the Malayalam film industry. "Following some incidents that should never have occurred, the government established the Justice Hema Committee to study the film industry, prepare a report, suggest remedies, and recommend actions. I wholeheartedly welcome and support the recommendations and solutions outlined in that report," Mammootty stated. He also stressed the need for unity across the industry to bring about meaningful change. "It is time for all groups within the film industry to stand united and without division to implement these recommendations."

Mammootty further urged for legal backing to implement the practical recommendations of the report. "The practical recommendations of the Justice Hema Committee report must be implemented, and if there are any legal obstacles, necessary legislation should be enacted," he stated. The actor also called for a transparent investigation into the allegations. "Let the police conduct an honest investigation, and let the court decide the penalties."

He concluded his statement by addressing concerns about power dynamics in the industry, stating, "There is no 'power centre' in cinema. The film industry is not a space where such a thing can exist." His remarks aimed to dispel the perception of unchecked authority or influence within the industry, reinforcing a call for equitable and fair practices.

Mammootty's statement comes a day after veteran actor Mohanlal's first public response following the release of the Hema Committee report and the wave of sexual misconduct allegations that followed. Mohanlal, who recently resigned as the President of the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA), addressed the media in Thiruvananthapuram. Emphasising the need to welcome the Hema Committee Report, he stated, "The whole industry is answerable to the revelations in the report," suggesting that AMMA is not solely accountable. Mohanlal called for collaborative efforts to address the issues highlighted by the report.
