Jimikki Kammal co-singer Renjith Unni makes composing debut in Malayalam. 

Renjith Unni, who sang alongside Vineeth Sreenivasan in the viral hit Jimikki Kammal (from Velipadinte Pusthakam), is making his debut as a composer in Malayalam with the upcoming Babu Antony-starrer The Great Escape, directed by Sandeep JL. 

Renjith, who got his start by composing in the Tamil film, Parundhaaguthu Oor Kuruvi, wrote the tunes for an item song called Take You Down Mahiya, with vocals by Sunidhi Chauhan for the Malayalam version and MM Manasi for the Tamil version. 

Renjith started his music career as a playback singer in 2012 with the Kunchacko Boban-starrer Dr Love. He was one of the voices for the campus track, Nannavoola. He later became part of films like Achayans, Velipadinte Pusthakam, Oru Kuttanadan Blog, and KGF Chapter 1 (Malayalam, Tamil versions). In 2016, he dabbled in directing music for a bilingual album tribute to mothers, for which Shwetha Mohan (Tamil) and Sapthavarna Chakravarthy (Hindi) lent their voices.

It was John W Varghese of Prompt Entertainments who facilitated his meeting with director Sandeep JL, who wanted Renjith to compose a Bollywood-style item song -- a "big challenge" for the latter as this is the first time that he had to take on a work of this magnitude. "Although I used to listen to Bollywood songs for a long time, putting together something like this was anxiety-inducing," says Renjith. "Once I finished it, the first name that came to mind was Sunidhi Chauhan, whom I was initially apprehensive about approaching because I hadn't established myself as a well-known composer yet. Fortunately, she liked it!"  (MM Manasai of Ranjithame fame sang the Tamil version).

As a staunchly passionate music lover, Renjith's biggest wish is to stay connected to music forever. He credits the positive support from friends, family and well-wishers as his biggest motivator.
