Nanpakal Nerathu Mayakkam, the recently released Malayalam film starring Mammootty in the lead role, has been receiving appreciation from all around the corner since its release. Now the Lijo Jose Pellissery-directorial has been adorned with another feather in its cap, as it is being enlisted in The New York Times' top five international movies to watch listicle in the first position. 

The producers of the film have announced the news through their Twitter handle. It is the first time an Indian film has been found on the list. The Magazine has described the film as a quotidian slice of Kafka: a gentle, keenly observed comedy. Nanpakal Nerathu Mayakkam is about James, a middle-aged Malayali family man, who slips into an afternoon nap and wakes up as a different person—Sundaram, a Tamilian. Before its theatrical release, Nanpakal Nerathu Mayakkam had its world premiere at the 27th International Film Festival of Kerala, where it won the Rajata Chakoram award through an audience poll.

Nanpakal Nerathu Mayakkam has a script by S Hareesh based on Lijo's story. The film also Tamil actors like Ramya Pandian, Namo Narayana and Poo Ram in prominent roles.
