India's official Oscar Submission 2018- Everyone is a Hero fails to make it to the final cut

On Thursday, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences shortlisted ten categories for the upcoming 96th Oscars ceremony. Unfortunately, Malayalam film 2018- Everyone is a Hero, which was India's official entry under the Oscars 2024 in the Best International Feature Film category, did not make it to the list. Another Indian film, 12th Fail, which was submitted as an independent entry, also could not make it to the final list.

Along with the International Feature Film category, the Academy also announced the nominees in categories including Documentary Feature Documentary Short Subject, Makeup and Hairstyling, Sound, Original Score, Original Song, Animated Short Film, Live Action Short Film, and Visual Effects.

It is to be noted that, another Indian film, The Face of the Faceless, headlined by Kerala State Film Award-winning actor Win. C, which was selected for The Best Original Song and the Original Score categories, also missed the mark.

Meanwhile, Indo-Canadian filmmaker Nisha Pahuja's latest project, To Kill A Tiger, has been shortlisted in the Documentary Feature Film category.

At the 95th Academy Awards held in the previous year, India participated in three categories, namely Documentary Feature, Documentary Short Film, and Best Original Song. The Elephant Whisperers won the award for Documentary Short Film, whereas MM Keeranvani won the award for Best Original Song for RRR.

Since Lagaan (2002), India has never made it to the final five of the Oscars. It is to be noted that 2018 is only the fourth Malayalam film after Guru (1997), Adaminte Makan Abu (2011), and Jallikattu (2019) to be picked as India's official submission for the Academy Awards.

The 96th edition of the Academy Awards will be announced on March 10, 2024. The final list of the nominees will be revealed on 23 January.
