Mammootty and Shaji Kailas celebrate 27 years of The King

It has been exactly 27 years since the release of The King. Mammootty and director Shaji Kailas, the two prime architects of the blockbuster, met on Friday and celebrated the film's anniversary by cutting a cake. Director Vysakh and scriptwriter Uday Krishna were also spotted in the photos.

The King, scripted by Renji Panicker, is a political action thriller in which Mammootty played the lead role of a district collector. The character Thevalliparambil Joseph Alex is regarded as one of Mammootty's most stylish portrayals ever. The film was one of the biggest blockbusters of its time. In 2012, director Shaji Kailas made a combined sequel for The King and his 1994-released film CommissionerTitled The King and the Commissioner, it saw the return of Mammootty as Joseph Alex while Suresh Gopi reprised his iconic cop role, Bharath Chandran.

Mammootty is currently shooting for Jeo Baby's Kaathal, which has Jyotika as the female lead. He also Christopher and Nanpakal Nerathu Mayakkam gearing up for release.

Shaji Kailas, on the other hand, made a blockbuster comeback earlier this year with Kaduva. The director also has the Mohanlal-starrer Alone and Kaapa, headlined by Prithviraj, Asif Ali, Aparna Balamurali and Anna Ben, coming up.
