The absence of Dr Vishnuvardhan was deeply felt at the Amrutha Mahotsava held in Bengaluru on September 27, a celebration that brought together the Kannada film industry and fans from across Karnataka. For actor Ramesh Aravind, who knew him closely, the occasion was an opportunity to revisit the person behind the spotlight.
“He should have been here today to see this celebration. We all feel he should have been there in person when he received the Karnataka Ratna,” Ramesh said.
Ramesh’s recollections were grounded in ordinary, human moments. He recounted a telling incident from a film set where he arrived to shoot despite suffering a fractured leg, purely to avoid wasting Vishnuvardhan’s allocated dates.
“When Vishnuvardhan sir saw me, he asked why I was limping,” Ramesh recalled. “I told him about the fracture and said I showed up because he had given his dates. He immediately reprimanded the producer and director, saying, ‘I will give my dates again. First, send this boy home.’”
For Ramesh, that instinctive empathy and willingness to prioritize a colleague’s health over his own schedule spoke volumes about the late icon’s character.
Beyond film sets, Vishnuvardhan’s home was an open sanctuary for friends and conversation. Ramesh recalled gatherings centered around simple meals and cultural pride. “He would often host close friends for food. On one occasion, he reminded all of us that wherever we go, we must speak Kannada. Recently, while driving on the Basavanagudi flyover, that memory came rushing back.”
Ramesh noted that Vishnuvardhan’s resonance lay in his exceptional voice, pristine diction, discipline, and everyday courtesy, traits visible both on camera and in quiet company.
“People have travelled from every corner of the state,” Ramesh observed, looking at the assembled crowd. “Most are strangers to one another, but the force uniting them is Vishnuvardhan.”
Concluding his tribute, Ramesh thanked organisers Veerakaputra Srinivas, Jayamala, Rajendra Singh Babu, and Rockline Venkatesh for honoring a legend whose legacy lives on in the values he championed.
