Veteran actor and Dadasaheb Phalke awardee Anant Nag has decided to retire from acting, bringing an end to a career that has spanned more than five decades. The actor has made it clear that his decision has nothing to do with his health, putting to rest speculation that his physical condition prompted him to step away from films.
Anant Nag says it is the state of filmmaking today that has made him take this decision. According to the actor, the focus has shifted towards box-office collections and commercial returns, while good writing and strong storytelling have taken a back seat. He feels the quality of scripts has declined considerably, leaving little room for the kind of cinema he wants to be part of.
The actor pointed to his recent films as the turning point. “The last five films I accepted failed at the box office. That was the moment I realised, enough is enough, it is time to leave all of this behind. I decided right then that I would not act anymore,” he said.
Anant Nag also said he has no intention of working with today's directors, expressing his reservations about an industry that, in his view, has become too focused on financial figures. His comments come after more than 50 years in cinema, during which he has worked across Kannada and other Indian-language films and taken on a wide range of roles.
While his retirement announcement has led to speculation about whether he might reconsider, particularly among those who have followed his work over the years, Anant Nag has been clear about his decision. He says he does not intend to return to acting.
