Actor and former MP Ramya has come out in support of Katrina Kaif after the actor faced criticism over her appearance following childbirth.
Katrina, who gave birth to a baby boy last year, has largely stayed away from films and public appearances while focusing on motherhood. She was recently seen with her husband, actor Vicky Kaushal, at a Ganesh Chaturthi celebration hosted by the Ambanis. Pictures from the event sparked comments about her body, with some social media users comparing her current appearance with older pictures and referring to the latter as her “prime”.
Ramya has questioned that comparison, particularly the idea that a woman’s worth or prime can be linked to how slim she looks. Sharing her thoughts on social media, Ramya asked, “What is her ‘prime’? Does a woman come with an expiry date? How do you decide what her ‘prime’ is?”
She went on to question whether looking like someone who can pose for a magazine cover is what defines a woman at her best. “A woman’s body changes. During pregnancy, after childbirth, during menopause — the body goes through different phases. That does not mean she is declining. That is simply how she is living,” Ramya said, adding that having a slim waist does not automatically mean that an actor is at the peak of her career or life.
For Ramya, the idea of being in one’s “prime” has little to do with appearance. She said it should instead be about doing work one enjoys, being happy and having the freedom to choose the life one wants.
“Katrina is in her prime now. She is living the life she wants and has chosen for herself,” Ramya said. She also extended that thought to women more broadly, saying every woman reading her message is in her prime and remains so from the day she is born until her final day.
Katrina has received support from several others in the film industry following the criticism, including actor Ali Zafar, Sonarika Bhadoria and others, who have spoken out against comments about her appearance.
