Fifty-four years after its original release, the 1972 Dr Rajkumar-starrer Jagamechida Maga is heading back to the big screen. In a treat for Kannada cinema purists and fans of the legendary matinee idol, the mythological fantasy drama has been upgraded from its original black-and-white format into vivid colour, backed by widescreen Cinemascope and modern 5.1 surround sound.
The restoration and re-release have been led by veteran producer and distributor S Udayashankar, who has spent over four decades in the industry. The film is slated for a grand release across Karnataka to commemorate Kannada Rajyotsava.
Directed by veteran filmmaker Hunsur Krishnamurthy and originally produced by Bhavanarayan, Jagamechida Maga featured an ensemble cast including Bharathi, KS Ashwath, MV Rajamma, and comedy titan Narasimharaju alongside the ‘Natasarvabhouma’.
Speaking about the project, Udayashankar stated that modernising the vintage title was a long-cherished ambition. "I have always been an ardent admirer of Dr Rajkumar. While I have produced and distributed numerous features over the decades, bringing Jagamechida Maga to modern audiences has been a dream close to my heart. Converting a five-decade-old black-and-white film into contemporary standards is an exacting technical process. The restoration and colour grading work has been underway for the past eighteen months at Chennai's Prasad Studios."
The film joins a select league of Rajkumar milestones to undergo a full-colour technological revamp, following the theatrical success of restored titles like Satya Harishchandra (2008) and Kasturi Nivasa (2014). Udayashankar also confirmed that plans are underway to give a similar colour treatment to another Rajkumar landmark, the 1966 devotional biographical drama Mantralaya Mahatme.
Jagamechida Maga in its restored avatar will arrive on theatre screens statewide this November.
