An 80-year-old silk saree. A waist-length braid adorned with traditional jade bille. A classic nose ring and crimson bindi. At the 2026 edition of the prestigious Cannes Film Festival, Kannada actor and digital creator Disha Madan delivered one of the festival’s most culturally rooted fashion moments yet.
Known for Kannada films such as French Biriyani and her television outing Lakshmi Nivasa, Madan walked the Brut x Nespresso red carpet for the second consecutive year in a look that moved beyond couture spectacle and into the realm of storytelling, championing sustainability, craftsmanship and South Indian identity on a global stage.
Designed by Bengaluru-based label Niharika Vivek, Madan’s mermaid-silhouette gown was crafted from an 80-year-old vintage silk saree featuring a traditional zari border. Rather than deconstructing the original weave, the ensemble preserved the heritage fabric while transforming it into a contemporary red-carpet statement that retained its old-world soul.
The inspiration drew heavily from the intricate stone carvings of South Indian temples and feminine strength. The gown also featured detailed Banjara embroidery, brought to life by skilled women artisans who reportedly spent more than 2,500 hours handcrafting the piece.
Disha Madan completed the look with distinctly South Indian touches including an elongated braid embellished with traditional hair jewellery, statement earrings, a necklace, nose ring and a bold red bindi, proudly representing Karnataka amid the glamour of Cannes.
Sharing moments from the red carpet on Instagram, Disha Madan described the experience as “one of the proudest moments” of her life, adding that Cannes, for her, is “not just about fashion, but about representing our culture on a global platform.”
