In a development that has stirred both the film and political corridors, K Venkat Narayana, producer of former actor and current Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay’s upcoming final film Jana Nayagan, has been appointed as the Special Representative of the Tamil Nadu government in New Delhi for a one-year duration.
Apart from being widely known as the producer of Jana Nayagan he was also seen accompanying Vijay during key political meetings, including joining CM Vijay's visit to the Governor earlier this year when Vijay staked claim to form the government.
According to the official government order, Venkat Narayana will hold the post temporarily for one year from the date he assumes charge. The detailed terms and responsibilities of the appointment are expected to be issued separately.
However, the move has triggered sharp criticism from the opposition parties, which has questioned the rationale behind the appointment.
DMK MP P Wilson has strongly criticised the decision, arguing that assigning such a sensitive administrative post to a film producer diminishes the seriousness of the role. He also highlighted that the position demands deep political and bureaucratic understanding, given its importance in coordinating state-centre relations.
Wilson further added that while the government has the authority to appoint individuals of its choice, such decisions should prioritise administrative credibility. He alleged that appointing a film producer could undermine the dignity of the office and project a negative image of Tamil Nadu in the national capital. The government, however, has not issued any response to the criticism so far.
Venkat Narayana, who heads KVN Productions, has previously produced Kannada films such as Sakath and Bye 2 Love and has also been involved in film distribution. The banner has recently backed big-budget projects including KD, Jana Nayagan, and Toxic, an upcoming Telugu film with Chiranjeevi and a Bollywood project. His production Balan: The Boy is currently performing well at the box office.
