The release of the current Tamil Chief Minister Vijay's final film, Jana Nayagan, has once again put the spotlight on the city's steep ticket pricing, with premium multiplex tickets reaching an eye-watering ₹2,600.
After Hollywood spectacles such as Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey and Spider-Man: Brand New Day, Jana Nayagan is the latest film to witness unprecedented ticket prices in Bengaluru, underlining the city's growing reputation as India's costliest movie market.
Adding to the frenzy, the film is witnessing exceptional demand across Karnataka. While premium multiplexes have introduced dynamic pricing, single-screen theatres are also cashing in on the craze, with ticket prices ranging between ₹500 and ₹800, and in several theatres touching ₹1,000. In multiplexes, premium formats have taken pricing to another level, with recliner seats selling for ₹2,600, while tickets priced at ₹1,300 and ₹1,500 have become commonplace.
Despite the hefty prices, demand remains unabated. Audiences looking for more affordable options are flocking to theatres on the city's outskirts, where tickets are available for around 200. However, many of these shows have already been sold out, while most early morning screenings across Bengaluru are housefull.
Interestingly, although Jana Nayagan is a Tamil film, ticket prices in Bengaluru far exceed those in Chennai, where the highest-priced ticket is around ₹190 under Tamil Nadu's regulated pricing system. Across major Indian cities, the highest ticket prices for Jana Nayagan stand in sharp contrast: Bengaluru tops the list at ₹2,600, followed by Hyderabad (₹600–₹800**), Mumbai (₹500–₹750), Delhi NCR (₹500–₹700), while Chennai, despite being the home market for the Vijay-starrer, remains the cheapest at around ₹190 under Tamil Nadu's regulated pricing policy.
Sky-high pricing for big-ticket releases has increasingly become the norm in Bengaluru. Earlier, tickets for The Odyssey IMAX screenings were priced at ₹ 1,600, while advance bookings for Spider-Man: Brand New Day were listed between ₹ 750 and ₹ 1,250. Even at these rates, shows continue to sell out within hours, thus explaining Bengalureans' appetite for the theatrical experience.
However, the trend also raises questions - Has Bengaluru's passion for cinema become an opportunity for exhibitors to push ticket prices beyond reasonable limits? The lack of effective regulation on pricing has allowed the city to emerge as India's most expensive movie market, even as several other states continue to cap ticket rates for theatrical releases.
