While Mithya brought home the Best Kannada Film award at the 72nd National Film Awards, Tulu cinema had its own reason to celebrate. Shivadhwaj Shetty's Imbu won the Best Tulu Film award, adding another proud moment to the growing recognition of regional cinema from Karnataka. For the filmmaker, the honour is the result of nearly two decades of dedication, with every film bringing him one step closer to this moment.
Speaking after the announcement, Shivadhwaj talked on the long journey that led to Imbu and the satisfaction of seeing Tulu cinema receive national recognition.
"This National Award is the result of nearly 18 years of effort. My last National recognition came with Gaggara, which was selected for the Indian Panorama and also won a National Award. Four years later, I made the Kodava film Nan Puttna Mann, which received a Karnataka State Award. Then came E Mannu, followed by Koramma, which I believe also deserved a National Award."
About his latest National Award-winning film, he adds, "With Imbu, I felt we had something truly special. The film brings together Tulu culture, the Daiva tradition and a contemporary story. It follows Balanna, played by Naveen D Padil, whose life changes after he receives a mobile phone. Through that simple idea, we explore how technology transforms lives, while nature remains an inseparable part of the story. I'm happy that Imbu has now brought National recognition to Tulu cinema."
Even before its National Award win, Imbu had travelled to film festivals across the world, earning seven international awards for its storytelling. The latest honour further strengthens its journey and shines a brighter spotlight on Tulu cinema. For Shivadhwaj Shetty, the recognition is not just a personal achievement, but also a sign that stories rooted in local culture can find appreciation on the national and international stage.
