Legendary playback singer S Janaki, who passed away at the age of 88, had visited Mangaluru just 15 days before her death, according to reports. The visit, during which she offered prayers at prominent temples, is now being remembered as one of her last public appearances.
Reports state that Janaki visited the renowned Mangaladevi Temple before travelling to Kamalashile Temple. She offered prayers at both temples during her visit to the coastal region.
Following her demise on Saturday, tributes have poured in from across the film fraternity, political leaders, musicians, and fans, acknowledging her contribution to Indian cinema. During a career spanning several decades, Janaki recorded more than 48,000 songs in over 20 languages, including a vast body of work in Kannada.
According to sources from her family quoted in media reports, Janaki's mortal remains will be kept for public homage in Mysuru on Sunday, allowing admirers and members of the film industry to pay their last respects.
After the public viewing, her last rites are expected to be conducted according to Telugu Brahmin customs. Reports further state that the final rites will be performed by her granddaughter, Apsara.
S Janaki's passing marks the end of an era in Indian playback singing. While her death has been widely mourned across the country, her extensive body of work continues to remain an enduring part of Indian cinema and music.
