Three decades after creating one of Kannada cinema's most loved classics, America America, director Nagathihalli Chandrashekar is back with the iconic title. The name remains the same, but the story is entirely new.
The filmmaker has announced America America 2, clarifying that it is not a sequel to the 1996 film, instead, it is a fresh, standalone story inspired by a novel written by Sahana Vijaykumar.
Starring Nirup Bhandari, Shanvi Srivastava and Pruthvi Ambaar in the lead, the film recently unveiled its title at a press event, where the cast and crew shared insights into the project.
Speaking at the launch, Nagathihalli Chandrashekar said every "new" story is, in some way, born from an old one. While America America 2 borrows the beloved title, he stressed that it has no narrative connection to the original. "The characters, the journey and the emotions are completely different. This is not a continuation of the earlier film," he said.
The director described the film as largely woman-centric, highlighting Shanvi Srivastava's performance as one of its biggest strengths. He also praised Nirup Bhandari and Pruthvi Ambaar for their performances.
The film has already wrapped shooting and features four melodious songs composed by Mano Murthy, with background score by Nakul Abhyankar. Cinematographer SK Rao has captured the beauty of the United States, while editor Sri Crazy Minds has complemented the visuals with striking drone footage. The film is produced under the Nagathihalli Cine Creations banner.
Nirup Bhandari revealed that he agreed to the film the moment he heard its title. "I still remember watching America America in theatres 30 years ago. Though this isn't a sequel, I believe this story and its characters will stay with audiences just as strongly. I'm grateful to Nagathihalli sir for trusting me with this role," he said.
For Shanvi Srivastava, the film marks one of the most memorable roles of her career. "In my 13-year journey in cinema, I've never played a character like this. I'm thankful to the director for giving me such a wonderful role. Working alongside such talented co-stars and technicians has been a rewarding experience," she said.
Pruthvi Ambaar called Nagathihalli Chandrashekar an inspiration, saying the veteran filmmaker's youthful enthusiasm continues to motivate everyone around him. "The original America America still lives in people's hearts through its songs, dialogues and visuals. It's a privilege to be part of a film with the same title, directed by the man who created that classic," he said.
Production head Shobha Nagathihalli Chandrashekar, cinematographer SK Rao and editor Sri Crazy Minds also shared their experiences of working on America America 2, expressing confidence that the film will offer audiences a fresh emotional journey while honouring the legacy of its iconic title.
