The voice behind the popular 'Brahmakalasha' from Kantara: Chapter 1 returns to Kannada cinema with a new song. Abbie V has lent his voice to 'Jagava Kaayo Devanu', the latest song from Nagaraj Somayaji’s Devi Mahatme, which is currently gearing up for its release.
Abbie V raised in Canada and trained in both Carnatic and Hindustani classical music, the singer has increasingly been associated with devotional and spiritual compositions. For Devi Mahatme, he joins lyricist Pramod Maravanthe and composer Likith Prasad Shetty for the song.
The release comes at an interesting point for the film. Despite its title, Devi Mahatme is not a devotional film. Nagaraj Somayaji had earlier described it as a comedy thriller set in and around Kundapura, with the popular Yakshagana performance Devi Mahatme forming part of its backdrop. The story is rooted in everyday people, their quirks and the humour that comes out of their situations.
The film, Nagaraj Somayaji’s second directorial after Maryade Prashne, has already completed its shoot and moved into post-production. It also became the first film album outside Hombale Music’s in-house productions to be acquired by the label.
The recently released teaser had further built curiosity around the film, with Rangayana Raghu’s performance, Likith Prasad Shetty’s background score and SK Rao’s cinematography drawing attention.
Produced by Vidya Gandhirajan under the UVG Studio banner, Devi Mahatme is written and directed by Nagaraj Somayaji. Aravind Kuplikar, Bhaskar Bangera, Guru Arya and Vadiraj Shetty have also been part of the writing team, while Ujwal Chandra is handling the editing.
With 'Jagava Kaayo Devanu', the makers are now adding a musical piece to a film that has so far kept its comedy-thriller identity distinct from the devotional associations of its title.
