Badami's historic fort turned into a vibrant film set this week as over 1,000 dancers, technicians and folk artistes came together for the title song of Karnatabalam Ajeyam, marking one of the biggest schedules of Dhyan Yogeeshwara's debut film. Directed by Naganna, the film is currently being shot across Badami, Aihole and Pattadakal.
The six-day schedule included the shooting of the track 'Badami Seemeyidu Entha Sobagu,' written by Trilok Trivikram and choreographed by Mohan Master. The song showcases Karnataka's folk traditions, including Yakshagana, Veeragase and Nandikolu, with music composed by V Harikrishna.
Producer-actor and MLA C P Yogeshwaara said the film draws from Karnataka's past while reflecting present-day concerns. Beginning in Badami and travelling across the state, the narrative connects the legacy of the Chalukyas with the Mahadayi issue and the struggles of farmers.
"Many historical films rely on fictional narratives. Ours draws from real events while addressing contemporary issues. Karnatabalam was the name of Emperor Pulakeshi's army, and that's where the title comes from," he said. Yogeshwar, who returns to acting after 25 years as a farmer leader, added that about 35 per cent of the film has been completed.
Naganna said the narrative unfolds across two timelines, spanning the sixth century and the present day. "The protagonist is named Vatapi. We wanted to tell a story rooted in our land, culture and people while connecting with today's generation," he said. The team will next shoot in Channapatna, Belagavi, Hubballi and other locations.
For Dhyan, the film marks his debut as a lead actor. Having spent nearly 20 days shooting in Badami, he thanked the local people for their support. "I always wanted to become an actor. My father was initially hesitant, but later believed I was ready. My aim is to establish myself as an actor," he said.
The film stars Manika Vishwakarma, Laya, Sampath Maitreya, Manasi Sudhir, Bala Rajawadi and Pawan. Shekar Chandra is the cinematographer, while M S Ramesh has written the dialogues. The makers are eyeing a Sankranti 2027 release.
