Veteran Kannada actor M S Umesh, a much-loved figure in Kannada cinema for over six decades, is facing one of the toughest challenges of his life. The 82-year-old was admitted to the hospital on Friday, October 10, after slipping and falling at his home.
What began as treatment for leg and hip injuries took an unexpected turn when doctors discovered that Umesh is battling stage four liver cancer. The fall left him with a fracture in his left thigh joint and an injury to his right shoulder.
Dr Shivaraj Gowda, who is overseeing his treatment, said initial check-ups showed normal blood pressure and sugar levels. However, during surgical preparations, earlier scans revealed a lump in his liver. Further tests confirmed that the cancer had spread to other organs.
According to the doctor, Umesh showed few symptoms apart from a loss of appetite, change in taste, and mild stomach pain. “It is a silent killer. In the early stages, there is no pain, which is why it often goes unnoticed. We have already conducted further tests and will begin chemotherapy once the reports come in,” he explained.
Despite the seriousness of his condition, Umesh remains optimistic. Speaking from his hospital bed, he reassured his fans, saying, “Falling at my age is not unusual. I have a few bruises, but the doctors are taking care of me wonderfully. They have promised me that I will recover soon. I had shooting commitments but told the team I couldn’t do them for now. Once I’m healthy again, I’ll be back to give my best. The blessings of Kannada people are always with me.”
