Filmmaker Atlee Kumar, the man behind blockbusters like Jawan, Bigil, and Theri, was in Bengaluru for the World Pickleball League (WPL) event, but it was his affection for Karnataka’s cinema and culture that truly took center stage.

During his visit, Atlee opened up about his admiration for Kannada films and the storytellers who’ve redefined South Indian cinema. Speaking about Rishab Shetty’s Kantara: Chapter 1, which has crossed the ₹500 crore mark worldwide, Atlee said, “Kantara is unbelievable. I spoke to Rishab, and what he has pulled off is remarkable. I’m really happy for the film.”

The director also shared his admiration for the stars who’ve taken Kannada cinema to national heights. “I’m also a good friend of Yash,” Atlee said. “Both Yash and Rishab have contributed immensely, and they’re a huge inspiration to filmmakers.”

Atlee’s bond with Karnataka goes beyond cinema. A devoted follower of the Kukke Subrahmanya Temple, he spoke warmly about his spiritual connection to the state. “I have great faith in Lord Subrahmanya,” he said, revealing that he often plans his temple visits around his trips to Bengaluru.

Calling Bengaluru one of his favorite cities, Atlee added, “Bengaluru has always welcomed me with love — whether it’s through my films or now through sports."

The filmmaker, who recently ventured into sports ownership with the Bengaluru Jawans Pickleball Team, also spoke about his growing interest in fitness and mental health. “Sports play a huge role in overall well-being. There’s no age bar. Pickleball, especially, is an easy and effective way to stay active and mentally balanced. I want to help spread this game across the country,” he said.

Atlee, who is now working with Allu Arjun, was asked if he plans to bring the star down for a game. He replied, “We both have packed schedules, but I’ll definitely ask Allu if we can play a game of Pickleball sometime.”

Atlee expressed gratitude for the phenomenal success of Shahrukh starrer Jawan. “God has been kind. Jawan has received so much love — from the theatres to the National award, and now the Bengaluru Jawans team. For me, Jawan is not just a title; it’s an emotion. It stands for strength, protection, and positivity,” he said.
