Actor Ramya has filed a police complaint after facing targeted online abuse from fans of actor Darshan, who is currently an accused in the Renukaswamy murder case. The harassment included some trolls insinuating the demise of Ramya.

“The trolling began after I commented on the Supreme Court’s remarks in the Darshan case, saying, SC is a ray of hope for the common people of India – justice for the family of Renukaswamy," said Ramya, adding, “As a celebrity, I’m used to criticism. But what I faced this time was completely different. It was vicious, violent, and crossed every line of decency. I’ve never experienced anything like this.”

She recalled feeling shaken after reading one specific comment: “Someone wrote that I should have been murdered instead of Renuka Swamy. That’s when it hit me; there’s no difference between what happened to him and what these people are doing online. The mindset is the same, one rooted in entitlement and hatred.”

Ramya has submitted a formal complaint and handed over a list of accounts behind the threats, many of them operating under fake identities. “I’ve shared details of 43 threatening accounts so far, and I believe over 100 fake profiles are involved. In the past, I ignored such trolling, thinking it was part of being a public figure. But this time, it went too far. The complaint has been filed, and I’ve been informed it will be forwarded to the cybercrime division.”

She added, “This isn’t just about me anymore. I want to send a message to society. We’re living in times where rape, murder, and online harassment are becoming disturbingly common. Women are being targeted every day. Why shouldn’t we have the same freedom as men? Why should we be silenced or threatened for speaking out?”

Ramya also recalled, “There were trolls even during the Yash and Sudeep fan clashes a couple of years ago. But this is something else. It’s targeted, hateful, and often aimed at destroying a woman’s self-respect. Character assassination has become the easiest tool to silence women, and that’s deeply dangerous.”

Ramya also acknowledged the support she has received. “The response, especially from women, young girls, and people in the film industry, has been overwhelming. So many relate to what I’ve been through. That solidarity means a lot. It gives me strength.”

Addressing the social media comments made by Darshan's wife Vijayalakshmi and actor Rakshita, Ramya said, “I don’t think their remarks were directed at me, and even if they were, that’s their opinion. This isn’t personal. It’s about rights. Every woman deserves safety, dignity, and the freedom to speak without fear.”

She concluded, “I sincerely hope justice is served. I urge everyone, whether you're a public figure or a private citizen, to follow the legal path. We cannot let this culture of abuse and threats go unchecked.”

Meanwhile, the Karnataka State Women’s Commission has taken note of the situation and has written to the Bengaluru police, urging swift and fair action.
