The trailer of the Kannada film Surya has been released, introducing a mass love story set against the backdrop of North Karnataka. Produced under the Nandi Cinemas banner by Belagavi-based brothers Basavaraj Benne and Ravi Benne, the film is scheduled for a Sankranthi theatrical release on January 15.

Directed by Sagar Das, Surya follows the journey of a young man who grows up in a slum and the challenges he faces after falling in love. The story focuses on the risks he takes, the resistance he encounters, and the support he receives while trying to protect his relationship. The makers say the film stays close to the region’s culture and language, giving it a strong North Karnataka identity.

Young actor Prashanth plays the lead role, with Harshitha on board as the female lead. Speaking at the trailer launch, producer Basavaraj Benne said that although they are based in Pune for business, making a Kannada film was a conscious decision to contribute to their home state. Co-producer Ravi Benne added that while the budget expanded during production, the final output justified the scale, confirming that the film will arrive in theatres on January 15.

Prashanth said he plays a slum-raised youth whose life changes after he falls in love. “How he struggles to hold on to that love forms the core of the film,” he explained. Harshitha said playing a college-going girl and working alongside senior actors was a rewarding experience, adding that watching her character during dubbing gave her confidence in the film.

Director Sagar Das noted that Surya is both the name of the protagonist and a reflection of middle-class aspiration. He revealed that one of the songs features references to Kalam, Ambedkar, and Modi to mirror the hero’s journey from a modest background toward ambition and self-belief. The film was shot across North Karnataka, Bengaluru, and Pune, and will release only in Kannada, even outside the state.

Music is composed by Sri Shastri, with the North Karnataka-style song Kelapana Gallada Hudugi already going viral. Cinematography is by Manuraj, dialogues by Manikanth KV, and action choreography by Narasimha. The cast includes Pramod Shetty, Shruti, and Ravishankar, among others.
