The celebrated 1977 Kannada film Ghatashraddha, also known as The Ritual, directed by the esteemed Girish Kasaravalli, is set to be honoured at the 81st Venice International Film Festival. Slated for screening in the Venice Classics section on September 3 and 4, this recognition marks a historic moment for Kannada cinema.
Ghatashraddha makes history as the very first Kannada film to be showcased at this prestigious festival. Directed by the remarkably talented Girish Kasaravalli at the age of 26 years, the film was revolutionary for its bold visual style and captivating storytelling, setting new benchmarks in Kannada cinema.
In a stunning achievement, Ghatashraddha stood alongside masterpieces by legendary filmmakers such as Satyajit Ray, Mrinal Sen, and Shyam Benegal, clinching a gold medal at the National Film Awards. The film was later celebrated as one of the top 20 Indian classics during the centenary of Indian cinema.
The film’s international acclaim has been amplified by its restoration, thanks to collaborations with Hollywood giants Martin Scorsese and George Lucas. The meticulous restoration, supported by Shivendra Singh Dungarpur’s renowned film heritage foundation, which also worked on Celluloid Man, has reintroduced Ghatashraddha to the global stage.
At the Venice International Film Festival, Ghatashraddha will enjoy the rare honour of three separate screenings, a testament to its enduring significance. Director Girish Kasaravalli has received a special invitation to attend the festival, underscoring the film’s impact and legacy.
Produced by Sadananda Suvarna, who also earned a gold medal at the Karnataka State Film Awards, Ghatashraddha boasts a screenplay adapted from a short story by Jnanpith Award winner UR Ananthamurthy. The film’s visual splendour is captured by cinematographer S Ramachandra, while the evocative music score is provided by BV Karanth, and the art direction is crafted by KV Subban.
