For decades, the noted music director Ilaiyaraaja has mesmerised audiences around the world with his incredible compositions. Recently, he hosted a musical evening at the Yuva Dasara in Mysuru, an event that showcased his artistic brilliance and captivated attendees with enchanting melodies.
Before the concert, Ilaiyaraaja paid his respects to the state's presiding deity, Goddess Chamundeshwari. Accompanying him was veteran director S Narayan, who remained by Ilaiyaraaja's side throughout his time in Mysuru.
During this special event, Ilaiyaraaja took a moment to reminisce about a pivotal moment in his career that transformed the Kannada music scene. He recounted how he encouraged the legendary Dr Rajkumar to lend his voice to the iconic song 'Yaare Koogadali' from the classic film Sampathige Savaal. This track not only showcased Rajkumar's immense talent but also marked the beginning of his illustrious singing journey.
Reflecting on his early days as an assistant to the renowned GK Venkatesh, Ilaiyaraaja shared insights into the collaborative process behind 'Yaare Koogadali.' At the time, PB Srinivas was the established voice for Rajkumar’s songs. However, Ilaiyaraaja felt that this particular piece needed a fresh sound. "I believed it needed a different vibe," he explained. "While PB Srinivas was exceptional, this song called for a unique energy."
Recognising Rajkumar’s extensive singing background from his theatre days, Ilaiyaraaja approached him with the idea of performing the song. Initially, Rajkumar hesitated, worried that he might take an opportunity away from PB Srinivas. However, Ilaiyaraaja encouraged him to listen to the composition first. After hearing the song, Rajkumar felt inspired and agreed to lend his voice.
This collaboration resulted in the unforgettable 'Yaare Koogadali', opening new musical avenues for Rajkumar, who later earned a National Film Award for his performance in 'Naadamaya' from Jeevana Chaithra. Ilaiyaraaja’s encouragement not only helped shape Rajkumar’s legacy but also highlighted the inspiration in the world of music.
