Rishab Shetty, known for his work in Kantara, is set to take on the role of one of India’s most iconic rulers, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, in an upcoming historical drama. Directed by Sandeep Singh, the film, titled The Pride of Bharat: Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, is slated for a worldwide release on January 21, 2027.

The actor-director, currently focused on completing the Hombale Films production Kantara: A Legend Chapter 1, with an October 2, 2025, release date, has added this ambitious project to his portfolio. The film will explore themes of history, aligning with Rishab’s recent cinematic choices.

The project was announced on social media by both Rishab and director Sandeep Singh, who shared the first look along with the following statement:

“Our honour and privilege, presenting the epic saga of India’s greatest warrior king – The Pride of Bharat: Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. This isn’t just a film – it’s a battle cry to honor a warrior who fought against all odds, challenged the might of the Mighty Mughal empire, and forged a legacy that can never be forgotten.”

Sandeep Singh, known for producing films like Mary Kom (2014) and Jhund (2022), is making his theatrical directorial debut with this venture. Singh has emphasised his intent to create a visually stunning narrative that does justice to the legendary Maratha king’s story.

Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, the founder of the Maratha Empire in the 17th century, remains one of India’s most revered historical figures. His life has inspired over 60 adaptations in film and television, beginning with the silent film Sinhagad in 1923. The Pride of Bharat aims to add a fresh perspective to this rich tradition and will release in multiple languages, including Hindi, English, Kannada, Tamil, Telugu, and Marathi, appealing to audiences across the globe.

Rishab Shetty, who rose to prominence with the college drama Kirik Party and earned critical acclaim for Sarkari Hi. Pra. Shaale, Kasaragodu, gained nationwide recognition with Kantara, which also earned him a National Award for his acting. His involvement in The Pride of Bharat marks a major step in his career, as he transitions from contemporary narratives to historical epics. Apart from The Pride of Bharat, Rishab is part of the prequel to Kantara and the mythological epic Jai Hanuman, set for release in 2026.
