Actor Surya Prakhyath, who made a promising debut with the romantic drama Naduve Antaravirali (2018), is still recognised for the chart-topping song 'Shaakuntle Sikkalu'. While the film gave him instant visibility, the momentum failed to translate into sustained opportunities.
“I got a good start, but things didn’t materialise the way I expected. A couple of films I completed were never released, and one project stalled midway. I realised I had landed in the wrong associations, so I decided to step back and wait,” he says, ahead of the release of his next film, JC - The University.
The actor considers JC - The University, which is set for a release on February 6, as a turning point. Collaborating with director Chethan Jayram from the script stage, Surya Prakhyath later approached actor-producer Dhananjay, who backed the film under Daali Pictures.
Seeking to build a stronger mass image, Prakyath says JC revolves around judicial custody and the system surrounding it. “The film explores how the law views prisoners and what happens after they walk out. Do they reform or return to crime? Without targeting anyone, the film highlights how money can influence even life inside jail,” he explains.
Though he believes cinema alone cannot reform society, Prakyath hopes the film offers reflection, especially for younger audiences. “We have even invited people who have experienced imprisonment to watch the film, hoping it triggers self-realisation,” he says.
The actor takes on multiple shades in JC - The University, portraying the protagonist across a 10-year journey spanning school, college, and adulthood. “I wanted to prove that I can adapt to varied character phases,” he notes.
Surya Prakhyath also credits Dhananjay’s support as crucial. “Money alone cannot make someone a star. Talent, persistence, and the right guidance matter. As actors, we can earn money later, but we cannot bring back lost time and age,” he says, hopeful that JC - The University marks an interesting chapter in his career.
