The emotional journey that captivated audiences in Naanu Matthu Gunda (2020) is set to continue in the highly anticipated sequel, Naanu Matthu Gunda 2, which hits the screens this Friday. Five years after the original film's release, this heartfelt follow-up hopes to build on the profound emotional connection between humans and animals that made the first movie a success. "We've heard about the conflict, but in this divine story of a human and animal bond, we see that connection transcend," says producer and director Raghu Hassan, who has also penned the story and screenplay along with Bharath Kumar. "The emotional core of the first film connected deeply with people, and we felt it was our duty to give them the next chapter," he added.
The sequel introduces new faces and is a continuation of the beloved narrative. The most intriguing new element is the introduction of Shankar's (Shivaraj KR Pete) son, played by Rakesh Adiga, a role that is expected to add a new layer of depth and emotional stakes to the story.
Elaborating on the casting of Rakesh Adiga, the director revealed that the actor underwent an extensive audition process and was the perfect fit. "This character gave him a chance to break from the harsh roles he often played," says Raghu, adding, "Moreover, post-Bigg Boss, his fame has changed, and we felt this role would be a perfect change of pace. He will be seen in a different light."
The film also features Rachana Inder as the female lead. The role played by Govinde Gowda, who was a close friend of Shankar in the first film, now serves as a crucial connecting point for the sequel. And of course, Simba, the Labrador from the first film, will be another connecting factor, and will be played by the new canine star, Bunty.
"Playing Shankar's son was a huge responsibility," says Rakesh, adding, "I had to honour the character that came before me while also creating my own path. The story is a beautiful blend of social concern and a divine element, and I'm excited for audiences to see how it all unfolds." The film also features a strong supporting cast, including veteran actors Avinash and Sadhu Kokila, along with Vijay Chendoor and Mahantesh, among others.
The film's soundtrack is composed by the acclaimed RP Pattnaik, who makes his comeback after a 15-year hiatus. The songs have been praised for their ability to evoke emotion and set the stage for the film's poignant narrative. Tanvik G has handled the film's cinematography.
Produced by Raghu Hassan under the banner of Poem Pictures, with dialogues and lyrics by Rohit Raman, Naanu Matthu Gunda 2 was shot in picturesque locations, including Ooty, Shimoga, Bengaluru, and parts of Tamil Nadu.
