With its spirited dialect, earthy humour, and heartfelt storytelling, Udaala, starring Pruthvi Shamanur and Hrithika Srinivas, is set to release in theatres this week. The film marks the directorial debut of  Amol Patil, who spent years learning under Yogaraj Bhat. For him, this is not just a first film but a heartfelt tribute to his homeland, Uttara Karnataka.

In a candid conversation, the director speaks about his journey, his bond with Yogaraj Bhat, and what it means to keep the Udaala spirit alive.

Q

What’s your equation with Yogaraj Bhat over the years?

A

Yogaraj sir is more than just a godfather to me. Over the years, the barrier of being a colleague has vanished, and now it feels like family with him. He never sits me down to teach what is right or wrong; instead, he lets me observe. Just by being around him in his ventures and wild ideas, I have learned so much. Even after all these years of assisting him, I still get spellbound looking at the immense talent he holds.

Q

How has that bond shaped your work as a filmmaker?

A

It is hard to explain, or maybe it is very easy. In every way, it has helped me. The biggest thing I have learned from him is to think abnormally. That is where real creativity lies.

Q

How did Yogaraj Bhat react when you told him about your idea for Udaala?

A

He was the happiest person. Since both of us are from North Karnataka, we mostly speak in that tongue. He instantly channeled all his energy into making the project better with me. He has gone out of his way many times to support me. I can never repay that.

Q

What does Udaala mean to you beyond being your debut?

A

It is a dream come true, a tribute to Uttara Karnataka, my native Bijapur, and everything that makes it special. Udaala is not just a debut; it is an emotion and a celebration of where I come from.

Q

Tell us about the film and its spirit.

A

Udaala is all about energy and entertainment. I want audiences to enjoy it together. It is a true theatre film. The dialect, often used just for sidekick roles, finally takes center stage here. Comedy, love, and emotions feel more alive through this language.

Q

Who are the key people behind Udaala?

A

Apart from Yogaraj sir, my producer Ravi Shamanur has been a blessing. His vision is unmatched. Pruthvi, my lead actor and buddy, has outshone himself. My team, Veeresh, Shivshankar, Chethan Daavy, and Madhu, have all given their hearts for this film.

Q

What do you think defines a director?

A

We are here to do what we love. A hundred years from now, no one will remember us, so while we are here, I just want to entertain people in my way and stay happy doing it.

Q

And finally, what does the word Udaala mean to you?

A

We were all Udaala, naughty, as kids; we just got better at hiding it as we grew older. Maybe it is time we kept that Udaala alive.
