Coming from an architecture background and early roles in Tulu cinema, actor Atharva Prakash is no stranger to reinvention. His latest film, X & Y, directed by Satya Prakash, has him playing an unusual role — that of a spirit, or an unborn soul waiting for a chance to be born on Earth.
“There was no reference for my character,” Atharva says, and adds, “At one point, PK was the only thing that came to mind. It was hard to visualise something that exists in-between. But Satya sir’s story and direction guided me. He became my mirror and character guide." Atharva, who had earlier collaborated with Satya in Man of the Match, credits that rapport for easing him into this experimental world. He says, "I never once checked the monitor. I trust him completely — he knows what I’m capable of.”
X & Y also stars Brinda Acharya, Ayaana, and Sundar Veena, among others. But Satya, known for pushing boundaries, keeps the ensemble at the heart of the story. “Everyone is a performer in this film. No one’s just filling a frame,” Atharva notes.
Though not the stereotypical mass hero yet, Atharva is in no rush. “Experience teaches you everything. I’m choosing roles that speak to me. Of course, I’d love to play a mass hero — and I call that ‘mass’ the ability to connect with all kinds of audiences. I’ve wanted that since seventh grade,” a composed Atharva says.
Speaking about Satya’s storytelling style, he adds, “His stories may take time to be understood, but they always feel fresh and real. X & Y is no different — it’s metaphysical, yes, but it’s also light-hearted and deeply human. Families will connect with it.” Up next? A complete tonal shift. “Non-Veg — a full-blown comedy, and I am waiting for its release," he signs off.
