Vijay Kumar takes on his third directorial project with City Lights, but this time, he steps only behind the camera, entrusting the lead role to Vinay Rajkumar. The film also marks the debut of Vijay's daughter, Monisha. Written and directed by Vijay, City Lights is produced by him alongside Vikram Arya.

The project officially commenced on Monday with a grand muhurath ceremony, attended by notable celebrities, including KFCC President M Narasimhalu, producer KP Sreekanth, Umapathy Srinivas Gowda, Yuva Rajkumar, Ninasam Sathish, Naveen Shankar, Praveen Tej, actor Yogi, and dialogue writer Maasthi, among others. A special moment unfolded as Raghavendra Rajkumar gave the first clap, while Dr Rajkumar's long-time driver, Hanumantu, switched on the camera—an emotional tribute to the legendary actor’s enduring legacy.

What has already begun to spark conversation is the first-look poster of the film, where Vinay Rajkumar and Monisha are seen carrying a goddess in line with the Yellamma tradition. It hints at a story that explores a unique community, where devotees engage in rituals, running through the streets, and using sticks as part of their spiritual devotion. This intriguing visual is just one of the many facets that City Lights looks to unfold.

The film's tagline, 'Jawabdaari Deepagalu' suggests a powerful exploration of the challenges and responsibilities tied to urban life. The story will delve into the lives of two individuals who move to Bangalore, facing the daily struggles of city life.

In an exclusive chat with CE, Vijay Kumar shared his insights into City Lights, emphasising the human stories often hidden beneath the surface of urban life. "City Lights sheds light on the city and the lives of those who are living here, but rarely seen and heard," he explains. "In my previous films like Salaga and Bheema, I focused on subjects close to reality, showing the challenges faced by middle-class people. This time, I want to spotlight the unseen, those struggling with life's hardships in our ever-changing city."

Vijay's filmmaking has always aimed to reflect the gritty realities of Bangalore, bringing attention to issues like youth involvement in rowdyism in Salaga and the growing drug problems among kids in Bheema. With City Lights, he hopes to capture the unspoken side of urban existence. "Through City Lights, people will begin to understand the other side of our city, the daily grind that so many go through. My focus remains on middle-class struggles—something I can relate to deeply," he adds.

While Vijay Kumar takes a step back from the lead role, the film will feature Vinay Rajkumar and Monisha. Vinay, excited about working on a project with a powerhouse team, expressed his enthusiasm about collaborating with director Vijay Kumar, dialogue writer Maasthi, and music composer Charan Raj—all of whom have delivered hits in their respective fields. "The first look shoot was incredibly exciting," he shares. "The atmosphere on set was electrifying, and I can't wait to sit down with Vijay sir soon. He has so much in store for City Lights."

For Monisha, the experience working under her father’s direction is both thrilling and meaningful. "The energy on set while doing the first look was incredible," she recalls. "When we shot the first poster, there was such positive energy. A community that follows the Yellamma tradition—carrying the goddess on their heads and roaming the streets—came to the set and dressed us up. Their presence made the whole experience more authentic."

The film reunites Vijay Kumar with composer Charan Raj for the third time after Salaga and Bheema. Harsha Kumar Gowda will be handling the cinematography for the film, which plans to go on floors on February 23.
