Palme d'Or-winning filmmaker Nanni Moretti, known for We Have a Pope and The Son's Room, is set to direct a romantic drama titled Succedera questa notte (It Will Happen Tonight). The film will feature Louis Garrel, most popular for The Dreamers and Little Women, and The Gunman star Jasmine Trinca in lead roles.
The project, which begins production in Spain and Italy later this year, draws loosely from writer Eshkol Nevo's short story series Hungry Heart (Lev Raev). Moretti previously made the film Three Floors based on Nevo's eponymous novel.
Succedera questa notte reunites Moretti and Trinca after 2006’s The Caiman. Trinca has recently juggled between films, such as Lea Todorov’s Maria Montessori and Ildiko Enyedi’s The Story of My Wife, and television, featuring in the well-appreciated series La Storia and The Art of Joy.
This film also marks Moretti's maiden project with Garrel, who recently starred in Quentin Dupieux’s The Second Act as well as the first two The Three Musketeers films. Moretti has sought a project to work on with Garrel for several years. In 2023, the two created a set of social media skits to promote director Garrel’s crime comedy The Innocent.
Succedera questa notte also stars Angela Finocchiaro, Antonio De Matteo, Elena Lietti, Hippolyte Girardot, Andrea Lattanzi, Paolo Sassanelli, and Pietro Ragusa. Moretti, who frequently stars in his own directorials, will also make a cameo in the film.
Moretti adapted the collection of short stories by Nevo alongside co-screenwriters Valia Santella and Federica Pontremoli. They wove the book’s separate stories, which explore various familial, social, political, and romantic bonds into one narrative.
Italian daily Il Messaggero first reported the news of Moretti’s new film.
