Japanese filmmaker Mamoru Hosoda's upcoming princess anime film Scarlet will be released in North American theatres on December 12, eyeing the Christmas holiday season.
The film's production and finance will be handled by Sony Pictures with Studio Chizu and Nippon TV. Sony will also distribute the film in the US and across the globe, and Toho will handle distribution in Japan.
Hosoda's works, such as Wolf Children (2012) and The Boy and the Beast (2015), are distinctive for their family-oriented themes. The filmmaker once pointed out that his works are inspired by his observation of his children interacting with each other.
The Oscar-nominated filmmaker's credits include Belle and Wolf Children. His 2018 film Mirai was nominated for an Oscar in the Best Animated Feature category.
Yuichiro Saito and Nozom Takahashi of Studio Chizu, founded by Hosoda, are producing the film with Toshimi Tanio of Nippon TV.
