How to Make Millions Before Grandma Dies is Thailand’s official entry for Best International Feature Oscar this year. The National Federation of Thai Film Associations announced the news on Friday.
Writer-director Pat Boonnitipat’s film struck a chord with viewers in Thailand to such an extent that it is considered a major cultural phenomenon there. According to reports, it is the highest-grossing film in Thailand this year. The film is about a conniving youngster who leaves his job in order to care for his ageing grandmother with the expectation that he can inherit her fortune. The fact that singer-actor Putthipong Assaratanakul plays the youngster adds to the film’s appeal in Thailand. Boonnitipat and Thodsapon ‘Ped’ Thiptinnakorn have written the film.
Following the announcement, the production house GDH stated that the film “has brought people of all generations to theaters, with viewers in their 20s to 50s bringing their 70- to 80-year-old grandparents to experience the film together, an increasingly rare sight in today’s digital age.”
